Beach Vacation Packing

So you're off to Cancun or Hawaii . . . is packing for a beach vacation all that difficult? An old friend used to say, "Grab your toothbrush and bikini and don't look back!" Of course, she longed to fly light and spend most of her beach vacation time shopping.

The Beach Vacation Packing Strategy

How you pack for your beach vacation depends on your philosophy. Some people want to get to the hot sand and margaritas and have no time for waiting at the baggage carousel for the bulging luggage. Others think of a beach vacation as a family safari that requires everything from folding beach chairs and beach umbrellas to bathing suits and diaper bags.

If you're packing for a beach vacation that requires a flight and a customs inspection, your major strategy is probably the "less-is-more" approach. If you're packing the minivan for a drive to the coast, then you need a two-pronged approach: one for your time on the sand, and another for the trip itself.

Sun Trips, Fun Trips

Packing for a beach vacation should probably be event based. That is, if you think of each activity you're likely to indulge in, then you can make a checklist of items for one activity at a time. Examples of activities include:

  • Beachcombing
  • Building sandcastles
  • Dancing till dawn
  • Lying on the beach, working on the tan, and sipping a daiquiri
  • Shopping
  • Surfing.

Once you've made your list, determine what you need to bring for that specific activity. Fortunately, most activities at the beach require the same few items.

The Beach Usually Means Sunny Weather

Of course you wouldn't dream of lying or playing in the sun all day without a giant bottle of sunscreen and a good pair of sunglasses. Remember, though, that Club Med isn't likely to run out of sunscreen before you get there. If you must get the 64-ounce economy size, then pour it into smaller bottles and pack it in corners.

How Many Bathing Suits?

You can't get by with just one bikini. If you go for a morning swim, you'll want to change into a nice, dry suit when you get back from shopping. Bathing suits don't dry in an instant in the humid climates of Hawaii or the Gulf Coast. Pamper yourself with an assortment of bathing suits and fun sunglasses. Yes, guys, you too.

Pack at least one outfit for eveningwear. Whether you go dancing or decide to dress up for a nice dinner, you'll be glad to show off the glow from your day in the sun. Holiday trips aren't just about days in the sun - the nightlife can be unforgettable as well.
