Big Bear Trout Fishing Derby
Held annually in June, the Big Bear Trout Fishing Derby awards $50,000 to the fisherman who catches the largest trout. Nine runner-ups are awarded various lodging coupons and package deals around Big Bear. You can enter the competition with your whole family, and children under 16 are allocated into a separate class.
Big Bear Triathlon and Duathlon
The Big Bear Triathlon begins on the shores of Big Bear Lake. If you decide to compete, you’ll start the competition by entering the waters for a three-quarter mile swim. After emerging and drying off, you’ll hop onto your bicycle for a rugged 14-mile ride along forest paths. Your final challenge is a six and a half-mile run to the finish line. If you’re not up for a full triathlon, Big Bear’s duathlon may be better suited to you. The duathlon begins with a two-mile run in place of the swim, and then proceeds with the same course as the triathlon. The triathlon and duathlon proceed regardless of weather conditions, and awards are given to the top three male and female athletes in each age group.
Winter Competitions at Big Bear Mountain Resort
A number of skiing and snowboarding competitions are annually held at Big Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, including downhill races, slalom courses and snow park events including half-pipe and jump competitions. As the site of the fist Winter X Games®, Big Bear Mountain Resort has a long history of hosting exciting ski and snowboard contests.
Oktoberfest
Celebrated throughout the month of October, Big Bear’s Oktoberfest is one of the best places to rejoice with good food and drink. Dozens of German and domestic beers are available on tap, as well as several wine varieties. A complimentary shuttle can ferry you to and from your accommodations in Big Bear. Traditional German Oktoberfest foods are cooked at the festival, including bratwurst, Polish sausage, sauerkraut and apple strudel. A number of competitions are regularly held during the event, including lag sawing, stein holding and drinking contests.
