Summer visitors to the resort community of Whistler in British Columbia will have nearly as many activities at their disposal as winter tourists. In addition to the various golf courses, the Blackcomb resort's mountain biking park and river kayaking opportunities, fishing and hunting near Whistler, B.C. are also available. Visitors who wish to hunt or fish will be subject to certain local laws and regulations that must be strictly observed, or legal consequences will apply.

Fishing in Whistler, British Columbia

The famous Whistler Blackcomb resort is one of the prominent outlets for fishing in Whistler. The resort's fishing organization, Whistler Fishing Guides, offers guided fishing outings for visitors and residents alike. Numerous locations in the Whistler vicinity provide a wealth of fishing opportunities. The Squamish region alone features five rivers with a healthy fish population, and three other rivers north of Whistler are equally fishable. The fish you can catch will largely vary by season, though rainbow trout, salmon and Dolly Varden char are available year-round.

Brook trout and cutthroat trout are both available during spring and summer. Steelhead are available in spring and winter.

Booking a Whistler Guided Fishing Outing

Half-day and full-day fishing tours are available, and can be booked through the resort. The half-day tour is five hours, while full-day tours are nine hours long. Fishing tours are restricted to individuals 10 years of age and older. All tours will include transportation to and from the location where you'll fish, with food, instruction and training upon request and all the equipment you'll need. On full-day tours, a lunch is often provided by the staff.

Hunting in Whistler, B.C.

The woods in the general Whistler area and its vicinity are full of various forms of wildlife, including a number of game animals suitable for hunting. Black bears, deer and moose all make a natural habitat out of the Whistler vicinity. Bears and deer are common, while moose are not as easily spotted. Smaller animals that hunters may be interested in include rabbits, foxes and mink.

Whistler Hunting Restrictions

A number of restrictions are in place regarding hunting in Whistler. Hunting is prohibited within 100 meters of homes, schools, farms and other buildings, and within 100 meters of either Callaghan Road or Highway 99 south. Since March of 2011, these provisions have extended to bow hunting with standard bows, compound bows or crossbows, as well as all firearms, knives and other weapons. The use of any weapons for hunting or the discharging of firearms within all municipal parks and neighborhoods where events and festivals in Whistler, B.C. often take place is also strictly prohibited.
