Layering your clothing is essential while winter camping. Dress in as many layers as possible in order to maintain a comfortable body temperature in times of increased or decreased activity. The two greatest risks of winter camping are hypothermia and frostbite, both of which are caused by the cold. Before you leave for your trip, have everyone going familiarize themselves with the signs of frostbite and hypothermia. Choose a durable, warm, tight fitting sleeping bag designed specifically for winter use, and sleep with a thermal pad or covering between you and the ground. Wear a hat when sleeping and bring plenty of extra socks. Avoid wearing cotton clothing as this absorbs moisture and is hard to dry out.
