Bicyclists in the United States are required to follow the same rules of the road as motorists. In some states, the law requires a cyclist to wear a helmet and use front and rear lights. Other states require you to use a bike lane when one is available. Many states prohibit bicycle use on highways, and in some locales it's illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk. Bicyclists can be issued citations for any standard traffic violation, including running stop signs and red lights. Never ride a bike against traffic, as this is dangerous and illegal.
