It’s Sunday afternoon, and you’ve gotten home from a trip just in time to check the scores. On the screen, Tiger Woods is leading the field, with Jim Furyk making a charge at the Memorial. Wow! Tiger is back – this is great! But wait… Tiger is not playing this weekend--what is this? As it turns out, it’s just another rain delay and they are showing the 2009 Memorial; so much for Tiger being back – for now. So, what really happened last weekend?
PGA Tour – At Jack Nicklaus' 2011 Nationwide Memorial Tournament, held at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, Steve Stricker fired off 6 birdies on the front nine to take the lead on Sunday. Both Matt Kuchar and Brandt Jobe shot 5 birdies on the front-nine to try and catch Stricker. Stricker needed every stroke to keep the lead, but he lost one on the 15th with a bogey before a 2 ½ hour rain delay set things back. Kuchar had closed the gap with two more birdies on the back-nine, and Jobe added two birdies and a bogey. So, it was a little tense while Tiger played the 2009 Memorial in re-runs. When the rain stopped, Stricker was two up with two holes to go. Kuchar parred his remaining holes to stay at 15-under. Jobe birdied the 18th to tie Kuchar at 15-under. Stricker bogeyed the 18th to fall back to 16-under, but it was enough to hold onto the lead and win Jack Nicklaus' event. Stricker’s victory jumped him into the #4 spot in the World Rankings and earned him a sweet $1.116 million.
European Tour – Over in Newport, Wales, at the Saab Wales Open, Alexander Noren won his second European Tour victory by two strokes over Anders Hansen and Gregory Bourdy. Bourdy had the best opportunity at overtaking Noren after shooting four birdies on the day to get to 7-under. Hansen , despite a double-bogey on the 2nd and a bogey on the 7th and 14th holes, matched his lost strokes with four birdies to come in even at 7-under and tie for second with Bourdy. Noren held on with two birdies and a bogey to shoot a 1-under 70 on the day and 9-under overall. Noren’s last win was the 2009 European Masters.
Champions Tour – The Champions tour played the Principal Charity Classic at the Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa. Bob Gilder shot 6 birdies on Sunday to record a final 14-under. Mark Brooks came in one stroke behind after shooting 6 birdies and three bogeys on the day. Behind Brooks at 12-under were Mike Goodes and Rod Spittle, who tied for third. The final shoot-out on the 18th hole provided an exciting finish, as Gilder hit his 30-foot putt for birdie, while Brooks bogeyed the hole. This was Gilder’s 10th victory on the senior tour and his first since 2006.
LPGA - At the ShopRite LPGA Classic at the Dolce Seaview Resort-Bay Course in Galloway Township, N.J., Brittany Lincicome shot a 5-under on Sunday to win the tournament by one stroke at 11-under. Jiyai Shin and Cristie Kerr were both one stroke back at 10-under. Lincicome earned $225,000 for the victory and moved up 9 positions to be ranked #15 on the Rolex World Rankings.
Week 24 – The PGA heads to the FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. The LPGA host the LPGA State Farm Classic at Panther Creek CC in Springfield, Illinois. The Champions Tour stays on the east coast to play the Greater Hickory Classic at the Robert Trent Jones Jr. Course - Rock Barn Golf Course in Conover, North Carolina. The European Tour heads to Torino, Italy to play the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi.
