Snowboarding and skiing in Big Bear, California, are two of the region's main attractions. In winter, snow sports are extremely popular at Big Bear, which gets more snow than the surrounding areas due to its elevation. In fact, the first Winter X Games® were hosted at Big Bear in 1997. Big Bear Mountain Resort
Big Bear Mountain Resort relies heavily on man-made snow, created from the waters of Big Bear Lake. This gives winter sports enthusiasts a more predictable and even course. Even in the middle of winter, you'll likely find yourself skiing down a few artificially-covered trails. But the region gets its own snow, too--the roads up to Big Bear can be treacherous, and at times, the California Department of Transportation requires vehicles to carry chains during travel on the roadways through the San Bernardino Mountains in the winter. This requirement is even extended to vehicles that have snow tires and all-wheel drive. Big Bear Mountain Resort comprises both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. Purchasing a lift ticket at one mountain allows you to freely travel between both locations. Some of the statistics for Bear Mountain Resort include: • An uphill capacity of over 16,000 skiers per hour • 26 total lifts • Several terrain parks complete with half pipes, jumps and jibs.
The Trail Difficulties
When planning your vacation in Big Bear, consider your skiing or snowboarding talent level. Around 70 percent of the trails on Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are geared towards intermediate and advanced skiers and riders. There are a few beginner's trails as well, and ski lessons are available to help get novice skiers ready for the more advanced trails.
