Standard poodles, also known as French poodles, are an intelligent breed that requires plenty of grooming. They should be bathed and have their hair cut every six to eight weeks. Standard poodles do shed, but their hair is caught by other curly, living hairs making regular clipping or brushing a necessity. Regularly check the ears for wax and ear mites and pluck any hairs growing inside the ear canal. Regularly scale and brush the dog's teeth to maintain optimal oral hygiene.
