The summer is a great time for retirees to get outside, enjoy the fresh air and take part in activities. Many activities are inexpensive or free and provide many hours of summer fun.

Start Walking

Summer time is the perfect time to take a stroll. Take a walk around your neighborhood, on walking trails or nearby park. If you live close to the beach, take a walk on the beach. You could even walk around a school’s track. If you have never been physically active, start a walking program and get moving.

Join an Exercise Class

Visit your local YMCA or fitness center for fitness programs designed specifically for seniors. The YMCA’s Silver Sneakers Program is designed especially for older adults seeking a healthy lifestyle.

Go To Your Public Library

The library is still one of the greatest resources in almost any community. The public library offers books, magazines, research and reference materials and free Internet access. Whether you just drop in to check out a book or want to spend the day surfing the Web, your local library is a great place to find hours of entertainment.

Be a Tourist in Your Own Home Town

We all tend to get into routines and frequent the usual places. Spend a day exploring a new area of town, go to a new restaurant or attraction that you have never visited or haven’t seen in a while.

Attend an Outdoor Music Concert

Many cities are having free outdoor music concerts for all ages. Load up the lawn chairs, pack some snacks and get ready to relax and listen to some music.

Go on a Picnic

Drive to your favorite state park and find a picnic area. It would be a great way to celebrate the 4th of July holiday coming up soon.

Start a Vegetable or Flower Garden

Gardening is a great form or exercise and does not put stress on the joints. Just the sheer pleasure of gardening can have great therapeutic benefits.  Some retirees take great joy in watching their flowers start to bloom and vegetables grow.

What fun things do you have planned this summer?
