Family law deals with cases pertaining to marriage, children or cases of harassment. These cases are often held in a special court called family court. Common types of family law proceedings are divorces, child support, custody, alimony, prenuptial agreements, adoption and abuse cases. Lawyers who choose to specialize in family law may need to take more continuing education courses than other specialties. Family lawyers must have conflict negotiation and time management skills, as many of these cases can become emotional, which can interrupt proceedings.
