A career in law enforcement can be rewarding, but has stringent requirements. Almost all police departments require applicants to graduate from high school or get a GED. Continued education, especially focusing on criminal justice is preferred and can give you an edge over other candidates. You'll have to pass a background check, knowledge test, medical exam and a physical fitness test. Recruits attend a police academy where they learn the rules, rights, driving, self defense, and other practical and theoretical aspects of policing.
