Pet Insurance

Many pet owners consider pet health insurance—a form of supplementary health insurance—to be an important and essential part of raising a happy and healthy pet. Depending upon the type of animal you own, you will need a different set of benefits to make sure that your pet receives exactly the kind of health care it needs. As such, pet insurance comparison is an important task to help you find the right insurance for your pet.

Tips for Pet Insurance Comparison

Keep the following in mind when shopping for pet insurance:

  • Always ask for a pet health insurance policy that is specific to your animal, as you may end up paying for benefits you will never use, depending upon the species that you keep as a pet. For example, if your pet is a bird, you will never need a policy that includes spay or neuter options. The major forms of health insurance offered by pet insurance companies include bird and exotic pet insurance, cat insurance and dog insurance. The bird and exotic pet insurance policies are usually sold as one package.
  • Ask the pet insurance company what type of deductible is required before insurance begins to pick up the cost. Most pet insurance policies will reimburse you (the owner) up to nearly 80 percent of what you pay to the animal clinic or veterinarian. Shop around by performing a wide pet insurance comparison to see if you can get an even higher rate of reimbursement from a different pet insurance company.
  • If your animal is old or prone to falling ill, you will likely want to purchase an insurance policy regardless of his overall health condition. Pet insurance typically runs between $30 and $60 per month, which is a small price to pay considering that major procedures can be quite expensive. Most animals will require some form of surgery at some point in their later years (the typical lifespan for a dog or cat is around 10 to 15 years), so pet insurance is often a good idea.
  • The younger your pet is when you purchase the policy the less expensive the policy will generally be.
