Do's and Don'ts for Working with an Auto Claims Adjuster

If you've been in an auto accident, the way you work with your insurance adjuster can affect whether your insurance claims are processed smoothly, delayed or even denied. To ensure the claims process goes smoothly, first learn some easy do's and don'ts for working with your insurance claims adjuster.

Working with an Auto Insurance Adjuster: What to Do

  • Do be honest. Insurance claims adjusters are trained to investigate a loss and make sure the information they receive is accurate. Exaggerating your loss can result in denied insurance claims.
  • Do be polite. Claims adjusters are hired to reach a settlement that is fair to both parties; they are not the enemy. If you are polite and cordial, this will go a long way toward getting your claim settled as quickly as possible.
  • Do document everything regarding your claim. Supplying relevant information and keeping good records goes a long way towards a smooth claims processing. Keep a diary of all communications with your insurer. Make and keep copies of all documents regarding your claim. You can even take photos of your car or injuries you sustained; these can help further illustrate your claim.
  • Do keep copies of your claims paperwork with you at all times to keep the claims process running. Your insurance adjuster may call your cell phone when you are away from home. If you keep copies of all your paperwork with you during the claims process, you'll always be able to quickly provide your insurance adjuster with the information he needs.

Working with an Auto Insurance Adjuster: What Not to Do

  • Don't assume your insurance claims adjuster knows your coverage. Trusting the adjuster to know your coverage may lead to delays or even denials. If your coverage has changed recently, your insurance adjuster may not even have access to accurate records. Take the time to understand your coverage so that if a dispute arises, you can politely stand your ground.
  • Don't be intimidated if you honestly disagree with your insurance adjuster's decision. The insurance adjuster's say isn't final. If you feel you're entitled to more, present your evidence firmly and politely. You also have the option to go to your state's insurance department or get legal help to get your claim issue resolved.
  • Don't wait to file your claim or provide requested information. The longer you wait to report an accident, the longer it will take to reach a settlement. By the same token, taking your time to provide information or documentation your insurance claims adjuster needs will needlessly delay your claim.
