Shifting the Voltage: Electric Wiring Permits

Electric wiring permits are separate from building and other types of permits.

Electric Wiring Projects Anything that entails altering your home's electrical devices, wiring or power outlets is considered an electrical renovation. Electrical renovations require their own permits and inspections in addition to other types of building permits.

You may need an electrical permit if you are planning to install or make changes to your home's electrical wiring, devices, circuit breakers or home electrical systems. On the other hand, you may not require an electrical permit if you are making small renovations, such as changing light fixtures, power switches or electric outlets. Contact the building office or consult a contractor or electrician to see if your remodel will require a special permit for electrical work.

How to Get a Permit for Electric Wiring You will need to apply for an electrical permit before you begin your home improvements. You can apply for one through your local building office either by mail, online or at your City or Town Hall. If you need assistance, contact the permitting officer or another staff member who takes care of building permits.

When filling out your application, you need to detail the electrical work your renovation entails. Include the name of your contractor or electrician, their contact information and the estimate you were given at the time of their hire. In some cases, especially if the project is large or complicated, your application signature will have to be witnessed by a notary public.

When your electrical renovations are finished you must make an appointment with an electrical inspector. The inspector will come to the site and evaluate the completed work to ensure that it has been done correctly and meets all of the necessary safety standards.

Hiring an Electrician If you're making a small change, or if you do not have a general contractor overseeing your renovation, you'll want to hire a professional electrician to take care of all your wiring jobs. Your electrician will be able to tell you whether you need a power service upgrade, or if your home already has enough power to handle the change. They will then handle all wiring aspects of your remodel.

Handling electrical wires and equipment is a dangerous and sometimes deadly job. Unless you are a trained professional, never attempt to handle these types of improvements on your own.

If your electrical wiring renovation includes a major appliance, such as a stove or a dishwasher, you may need to apply for additional mechanical renovation permits.
