I’m channeling my inner Martha Stewart and getting crafty for spring. My flock of backyard chickens is providing me with an abundance of eggs. Some of them are so beautiful that I’m trying to come up with creative ways to display them. This little DIY project has yielded my best results yet, so I had to share it with you.

I had some clear glass egg cups that I purchased from the dollar store years ago. I love the “chicken” motif, but I wasn’t really into the color. There’s nothing like a good old can of white spray paint to fix that kind of problem.

Check out the before:

And now look at them:

I bow down to you all powerful can of white spray paint. Is there nothing you can’t make prettier? I used a can of Painter’s Touch semi-gloss white spray paint that is designed for use on glass. It took about four coats to cover the egg cups. Let them dry for about two hours in between each coat.

While the paint on the egg cups was drying, I carefully took the tops of off four of my hen’s eggs. Why four when I only had three eggs cups? Well, in case I broke one during the process, of course. Trust me, I was glad I had that extra egg.

I tapped the tops of the eggs with a butter knife until I was able to carefully peel away just the top part of the shell. Then, I emptied out the eggs into a bowl, rinsed the inside of the shells with cool water, and left them on my windowsill to dry. Here they are drying:

Once the shells were completely dry, I took them outside into my garden for planting. I used a baby spoon to carefully fill each cup about 1/4 of the way full with dirt. Here is how it should look when you are doing it:

I dug up some clovers (a.k.a. weeds) that were infiltrating my flower beds. I gathered them, roots and all, into small bouquets and placed them inside the egg shells. Then I filled the remaining space inside the shell with more dirt.

I carefully washed off any dirt on the outside of the egg shells and on the leaves of the clovers. Here is the final product:

Didn’t it turn out so cute? I left them sitting on my windowsill for the rest of the day. Every time I look at them I start pining for spring. I have also seen some other variations of this idea using all white eggs, colorful flowers or just green grass. It’s hard to go wrong. Happy planting!
