Stress can affect people of any age, and teens are no exception. The teen years are a time of many exciting changes; however, change can cause stress even when that change is for the better. If you learn to recognize the causes and signs of teen stress, you'll be able to offer the teenagers in your life a few stress management tips.
Like adults, teens experience stress when they are in a situation that they feel is dangerous, painful, uncertain or just uncomfortable. Here are some common sources of teen stress:
High stress levels in teens can lead to additional problems. Some teens may become aggressive, while others withdraw from social situations. Risky behaviors, including drug and alcohol abuse, can result when teens try to manage intolerable stress levels with these substances. Improperly managed teen stress can also lead to anxiety, depression and physical illness.
