The Link Between Asthma Attacks and Allergic Reactions

Asthma is a condition that often arises from allergies. More specifically, the respiratory problems that arise during an allergy-induced asthma attack usually occur because of an allergic reaction.

Asthma that is triggered by allergens is called "allergic asthma." Allergic asthma is common and most easily treated by avoiding the particular allergen that triggers attacks.

While avoidance of the allergen is the best way to avoid allergic asthma attacks, sometimes that's not possible. Some individuals are highly sensitive to allergens that are very difficult to fully avoid, such as pollen and dust mites.

Of course, anyone can have an allergy without also having asthma. Conversely, not all asthma attacks are triggered by an allergic reaction. Stress, for instance, is a prime example of a non-allergy asthma trigger. Effective medication and stress management techniques are available for coping with stress-induced asthma attacks.

This section is divided into multiple articles looking at allergic reactions as they relate to asthma.
