Building Your Credit: The Disadvantages of Bad Credit

Bad credit can cause difficulties in many important areas of your life, such as getting a job, leasing or buying a home or car and finding insurance coverage. Build your credit wisely to establish a record of reliability and to avoid a bad credit score.

Importance of Good Credit

Good credit is crucial in a number of aspects of your life, including:

  • Employment: An increasing number of employers check credit history as a part of the recruitment process. Good credit indicates that a potential employee is organized and dependable.
  • Loans: To get a good monthly rate on a loan, whether a home mortgage or an automobile lease, you'll need good credit. Lenders want to see that you're reliable and won't default on loan.

If you're considered a risky investment, you'll only be eligible for high-interest and high-premium loans.

Establishing Good Credit

Good credit will help you get lower interest rates on loans and credit cards. If you have little or no credit history, establish some as soon as possible. You'll find yourself ineligible for most loans without an established credit history. Start building up your credit by applying for a secured credit card. If possible, have a co-signer with good credit back you on the application. This covers all the bases for both you and the credit provider--in their eyes, someone with proven reliability is legally obligated to repay them if you cannot.

Building Your Credit Wisely

Once you have a credit card, don't overspend beyond your means. One of the primary benefits of a credit card is that it allows you to show lenders that you're reliable and fully capable of paying bills on time. If you miss making payments on your credit card, you'll establish a poor credit history that will make getting good premiums on home and auto loans difficult. You must use your credit card in order to start building up a credit history. Try to make several purchases during each billing period, and be sure to pay them all in full whenever possible. Making only the minimum payments on your credit card won't hurt your credit history, but it will cause interest buildup, increasing your overall expenditures. If you begin to accumulate debt, take immediate and careful steps to lower it. Credit repair options are available to you. As you build your credit, obtaining a free credit report can help give you an idea of where you stand financially.
