Go Disc-less: How to Watch Free Movie Downloads on Your Big Screen

If you're a movie lover, you may have filled your computer's library with free movie downloads. Luckily, these online movies are no longer confined to your computer; movie downloads can now be streamed straight to your TV.

Service Box You can stream online movies directly to your TV through entertainment devices. For instance, many video game consoles enable you to stream movies, provided your console is connected to the Internet.

Some cable boxes and DVRs allow you to surf the Internet via your TV. A few of the larger movie sharing services even have their own entertainment boxes. As such, you may already have the technical requirements for this technology.

Manual Connection Hooking your computer up to your TV allows you to watch movies and show videos to a group--without having to crowd around a small computer screen.

Setting up the connection requires a bit of initial research, but it's easy to reconnect the necessary wires once you learn. The process is most convenient with laptops, as they can be brought close to the TV. With enough cables, however, you can even connect your desktop.

Inspect your TV and computer to determine the kind of outputs and inputs they have. An online image search will help you identify which of the following set-ups will work for your computer.

Types of Manual Connections Different cables provide varying levels of picture quality when transmitting an image from your computer to your TV:

  • DVI: This connection only works with high definition TVs and provides better picture than S-Video or VGA.
  • HDMI: This connection only works with high definition TVs and provides the best possible picture. Use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect the DVI port on your computer to the HDMI port on your TV.
  • S-Video: Note whether your computer and TV have 4-pin or 7-pin ports, as they must match to use an S-Video connection. This is a basic connection with the lowest picture quality.
  • VGA: This connection only works with high definition TVs and provides better picture than S-Video, but not quite as good as DVI.
  • The connection you use determines the input channel the feed will be connected to. If you aren't sure, use your TV's "input" button to scroll through input feeds until the image on your computer appears on your TV.

Once your computer is hooked up, explore subscription movie download services to find the provider that best suits your entertainment interests.
