Questions to Ask When Shopping for a Tablet Computer

Shopping for a tablet computer may seem daunting, but learning your computer lingo and asking the right questions can ensure you make the correct purchase for your needs.

Learn Your Computer Lingo
Don't forget that the primary goal of a salesperson is to get you to make a purchase. She may use a lot of computer jargon like "microprocessor," "CPU" and "RAM." Gain an understanding of basic computer terminology so you aren't confused by the lingo:
• CPU: the central processing unit (CPU) is essentially the brain of a computer. Every input you enter into your computer goes through the CPU, which directs all the different components of your computer.

• GPU: the graphics processing unit (GPU), also sometimes referred to as the visual processing unit (VPU), is responsible for displaying images on your computer screen. Many desktop computers have separate, dedicated video or graphics cards with onboard GPU's, while most laptops and tablet pc's have integrated GPU's (processing units directly fused to the motherboard).

• Microprocessor: a microprocessor is a compact CPU on a single microchip. Nearly all computers today use microprocessor CPU's. When you hear a term like "quad core processor," this means that the microprocessor in the computer is very powerful, holding four separate CPU's on a single microchip.

• RAM: random access memory (RAM) stores your computer's temporary data. Information stored in RAM isn't permanently saved like it is on a hard drive, and RAM helps determine your computer's multitasking ability.

Questions to Ask a Computer Salesperson
Whether you go out shopping for a high-priced or budget tablet computer, have a few questions in mind to ask the salesperson about your potential purchase. Here are some common inquiries to make:
• Ask about any special offers or package deals. You may be able to get additional accessories like a carrying case or extra battery with certain purchases.
• Ask about connectivity. Some tablets have several Ethernet, audio, video, HDMI and USB ports, while others are more limited.
• Make sure you understand the terms of your warranty. Computers are complex devices, and any number of things can go wrong without you having done anything incorrectly. A warranty will protect your purchase.
• Ask about wireless capabilities. All tablets have some form of wireless devices, usually a Wi-Fi™ connection, and some are capable of connecting to wireless provider's cell towers.
• Find out Which tablet computer will best suit your needs. Inform the salesperson how you intend to use your computer and he'll be able to show you the most applicable models.
