Modest Mussorgsky was a famous Russian composer, known for his rejection of Western musical traditions. Among his most famous works are "Night on Bald Mountain" and "Pictures at an Exhibition." He was a member of "The Five," a group of Russian composers trying to establish a Russian nationalist tradition. Mussorgsky's works were mostly unknown in his lifetime and he lived in a state of constant poverty, even sharing his small apartment with a fellow composer. He died of complications of his alcoholism in 1881. His works were made famous after his death by critic Vladimir Stasov.
