Though DVDs typically last longer than their VHS counterparts, you must take care when handling them to avoid damage, including scratches and smudges. After using a DVD, return it to the case. Keep the DVD away from the sun or excessive heat. When handling a disc, pick it up using the inside of the hole and the outer edges. Avoid touching the scannable surface, as this may leave fingerprints and affect playback quality. You may clean off your DVDs with a special cloth or a regular cloth with a smooth, soft texture--don't use anything that will scratch the surface, such as a paper towel.
