How Do I Know If a Record is the Real Thing?

It's a scary thought . . . but you might not know if it's counterfeit, or if it's an original pressing.

Unfortunately, some people try to scam record buyers by counterfeiting record albums. Don't fall into their traps! If you're searching for a specific record, you have two main courses of action to shield yourself from fraud:

  1. Do research on record albums you want to find. Don't head into the search unarmed. Know what you're looking for.
    • Is the vinyl a special color? (Some labels or label logos are certain colors based on the pressing.)
    • What pictures are on the back cover?
    • Are there alternate versions of the jacket or cover?
    • What songs are on the record? Are there also versions with outtakes or alternate recordings in circulation?
    • Was the record reissued? If so, when?
  2. Work with professionals. You'll greatly increase the chances that your record is the real thing if you buy from a reputable source. Although you may stumble across cheap goodies at rummage sales or flea markets, the people selling them are not experts. Don't expect to have your questions answered.

Remember the golden rule of record collecting: If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
